This is a personal project in which I recreated the Hand of the King pin from the Game of Thrones TV show using Blender and a Reprap 3D printer. The finished model is free to download and print! You can find it at Thingiverse. Here is brief overview of how it was done.
Part II: Printing
Importing to CuraThe .stl file is imported in Cura. The scale and orientation in Cura don't match those in Blender, so they must be adjusted accordingly. A length of 10cm was chosen for the pin, roughly the same size as seen of the show. It's important to remember that Cura deals with lenghts in milimeters.
PrintingThe model was printed on a Prusa i3 Hephestos printer. It is sold by BQ for around 500$ as a kit. The main advantage of this printer over others in its price range is that it has an LCD screen with a user freindly interface, so it doesn't have to be controlled from a computer.
PaintingThe pin was painted with gold paint. To achieve an aging effect, it was then coated with a thin black paint, which was wiped off with a cloth. The goal of this technique is to leave black paint in the knooks and crannies of the model, while leaving the more exposed surfaces shiny.
A safety pin was glued on the back to allow the pin to be worn. |
